Trilok Gurtu/The Glimpse
live at
Rang Bhavan
Bombay, India

Master Indian percussionst, Trilok Gurtu has been playing since infancy. He left Bombay in the 70's to head to Europe with just one drum and began building up his reputation. He has collaborated with trumpeter Don Cherry, saxophonist Jan Garbarek and been a major player with John McLaughlin's groups. His own groups have always been wide ranging in their stylistic approach, and in this concert, filmed in Bombay in October 1997, with his group 'The Glimpse', he focuses on his Indian roots, integrating other world musics, with a strong jazz and rock context. Trilok moves around the stage and uses anything from tablas, to snare drums, to plastic water buckets. The Glimpse features artists from India, Scandanavia, Italy and Bulgaria and is shot in Trilok's home city.

Joe Lovano Trio and
Vanessa Rubin and her Trio
live at
Mistura Fina
Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

World class Tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano is probably the most heralded jazz musician of the late 90's. Absorbing the styles of Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Jimmy Giuffre, he is a sublimely confident player who manages to strike a balance between passion and intellect, with wonderful craftmanship and lyricism. His 1996 Blue Note recording 'Joe Lovano Quartets at the Village Vangard' won the Jazz Album of the Year - 1996 Downbeat readers and critics poll. The film catches his first performance as a leader in Brasil in November 1997, on a double bill with Vanessa Rubin, one of the hottest young jazz singers in New York. From swing to ballads to cool blues, her smooth honeyed voice, long arching phrases and needlepoint timing mark her as a major jazz star for the future.

Joe Lovano Tenor Saxophone
Dennis Irwin Bass
Idris Muhammad Drums
Vanessa Rubin Vocals

Roy Hargrove's 'Crisol'
live at
De Melkweg
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Hargrove is the young New Orleans trumpet prodigy first talent spotted by Wynton Marsalis, who is now matching Marsalis (and all the other jazz trumpet players) as a winner of the jazz trumpet polls. Building his reputation as a keeper of the tradition, he is beginning to break out in new directions, most especially with his 12 piece latin oriented band, Crisol, featuring the great Cuban pianist, Chucho Valdez, leader of the renowned Irakere band, plus Frank Lacy on trombone and a barrage of percussionists. Their debut recording and tour of the summer Festivals created a sensational result, comparable with the buzz created by Dizzy Gillespie when he went 'latin' in the 40's. This is one of the great bands of jazz history in the making, filmed in Amsterdam in November 1997.

Line-up:-
Roy Hargrove Trumpet
Frank Lacy Trombone
Sherman Irby Alto Sax
Jacques Swartz-Bart Tenor Sax
Ed Cherry Guitar

Lenny White 'Present Tense'
live at
National Palace of Culture
Sofia, Bulgaria

White has been one of the leading drummers in jazz for three decades, powering all sorts of great bands, from those led by Chick Corea and Freddie Hubbard to Marcus Miller and Geri Allen. It's not surprising that when he came to put his own band together, it's an all star outfit, strong on dynamics and technical capability, but featuring some of the most tuneful of today's improvisers. Filmed in Sofia in October 1997, the band features Bennie Maupin, saxophonist from Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, Don Blackman on keyboards and Foley, a key player in Miles Davis' 80's groups plays the lead bass, alongside former Mahavishnu Orchestra member, Ralph Armstrong. This is very funky electric jazz.

Line-up:-
Lenny White Drums
Bennie Maupin Saxophones
Jonathan Dryden Keyboards
Donald Blackman Keyboards, Vocals
Foley Lead Bass
Ralphe Armstrong     Electric Bass

Larry Coryell 'Spaces Revisited'
with special guest Billy Cobham
live at
Fabrik
Hamburg, Germany

Thirty years ago, American guitarist Larry Coryell recorded one of fusion's most innovative records. Titled 'Spaces', it featured Chick Corea on piano, John McLaughlin on second guitar and Billy Cobham on drums. It was one of the best selling jazz records of the decade. In the intervening years, Coryell has played in more acoustic formats and straight ahead jazz, but for this concert (filmed in Hamburg in November 1997) he's back with the same fusion format, and his erstwhile colleague, drummer Billy Cobham is in the band too. They are joined by the French gypsy guitarist, Bireli Lagrene, and the brilliant young bassist from Cameroon, Richard Bona, who caused such a sensation playing with Joe Zawinul. The band have already recorded a CD, 'Spaces Revisited', but this film was shot in one of their first public appearances.

Line-up:-
Larry Coryell Guitar
Bireli Lagrene     Guitar
Richard Bona Electric Bass
Billy Cobham Drums
